Terms of use

About these terms

These terms describe the basis on which Family Affairs Organizer is offered. They are written in plain words so that they can be read in one sitting.

If you do not agree with them, you are free not to use the site.

The name and address of the owner of this site will be added here by the owner before launch.

What this tool is

Family Affairs Organizer is a tool for writing down, in your own words, where your papers and accounts are kept, what your wishes are, and whom to call. It lays out what you tell it so that it can be printed.

It is a record of information and wishes.

What this tool is not

  • It is not a will, a trust, a power of attorney, an advance directive or any other legal document, and it does not prepare one.
  • It does not give legal, financial, tax or medical advice.
  • Using it does not make anyone your attorney, your doctor or your adviser. No such relationship is created by using this site or by writing to its contact address.
  • The text on this site was not written by an attorney.
  • Nothing you record here has legal effect because it is recorded here.

A list of wishes is not a will.

Rules differ by state and country. For a will, a power of attorney or an advance directive, see your own attorney and your state's official sources.

Who may use it

The tool is for adults recording their own affairs. It is aimed at people in the United States.

This is for recording your own affairs, at your own pace. Nobody should fill it in for you, or press you to, without your agreement.

A helper may type for someone else only when that person is present and agrees.

What you are responsible for

  • What you record, and whether it is correct and up to date.
  • Keeping your own copies. A print or a backup file is a copy that does not depend on this browser.
  • Your backup passphrase, if you make an encrypted backup.
  • The device you use, who can unlock it, and where you keep any print or saved file.
  • Leaving secrets out. The tool asks you not to write passwords, PINs, full account numbers or full Social Security numbers.

If you lose this passphrase, this backup cannot be opened by anyone, including us. There is no recovery.

Stored data may not last

Your record is kept in your browser's storage on your device. A browser can clear that storage. A device can be lost or replaced.

This site makes no promise that a record stored in a browser will still be there later. Nobody at this site can recover a lost record or a forgotten passphrase.

More detail is in the privacy notice.

The first steps guide

The first steps guide is general information, drawn from official sources. Each source is listed with the date it was read on the sources page.

Official sources change. A page may have changed since it was read. What applies to you depends on where you live and on your own circumstances.

General information is not advice about your situation. For that, ask your own attorney, doctor or other adviser.

If you find an error, please report it. Corrections are listed on the changes page.

Fair use of the site

Please use the site only for its purpose. In particular, please do not:

  • record another person's affairs without that person's agreement;
  • press anyone to fill in, change or hand over a record;
  • present a record made here as a will or as any other legal document;
  • try to disrupt the site, or use it to harm anyone.

Who owns what

What you write in your record is yours. This site never receives it.

The words, layout and design of the site belong to its owner. You are welcome to print pages, including blank ones, for your own use and your family's.

Links to official sources lead to sites that this site does not run and cannot answer for.
